Discussion

The spit was excavated to help define the sequence of east-west aligned ditches in the northern central part of area 12AD. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour varying from 10YR 4/3 to 10YR 4/2), with daub and charcoal flecking noted in places. A spread of chalk rubble was exposed in the northern half, although further definition was required in two areas (012AD08172 and 012AD08187).
